Just googled if it was a copy,
"Well as far as a cartoon series Gundam did come out first. transformers originated from a toy company called Takara in Japan. They came out with a line of toys called the diaclone range. These were a vast assortmant of vehicles that transformed into robots and were piloted by little plastic figures. Hasbro/Kenner came accross these and decided to build a cartoon around the toy range. They took the idea of pilots out and made the robots a race of beings from a planet called cybertron. So as far as the gundam and transformers cartoons go, no transformers is not a copy. It is possible the animators found some inspiration in the gundam series but the series themselves are completely different. Essentially Transformers came about as a cartoon to market toys. Where as Gundam the show came first and it is because of the success of the show that the merchandise followed. Now if there is anything one could say might be a little bit of rip off is that takaras original diaclone toy range was similar to gundam in that it was piloted mecha. The difference was the diaclones transformed. I mean the concept of mecha is something that has been around for a long time. I mean it's not like gundam was the first. It was the first major successful one but not the first. and transformers are not even mecha. remember gundam revolves around a war which is fought between people. They use giant mecha called gundam to fight. transformers is an ongoing war between two races of robotic like beings from a planet called cybertron that have the ability to transform into another form. And again transformers was originally just a show made as a way to market toys. Though many shows are made for that purpose."
